LA Hair and Makeup artist: A Whole New Take on Hollywood Hair
The great thing about being a hair and makeup artist in LA, is that I get constant inspiration on how to shake up classic Hollywood glam. And when it comes to hair - whether it’s for an editorial shoot or red carpet event, sweet 16 or big birthday party - the infamous Hollywood Blowout is probably one of my most asked-for ‘do’s’, and definitely the most versatile! Paired with a bold red lip or smokey eye makeup look, this style is totally timeless.
I was recently booked as a hair stylist for Haley Kalil, on an LA-based photo shoot for QP Magazine. While this lucky lady naturally had a gorgeous mane for me to work on, the look I created on her is pretty straight-forward for most hair types. For this bombshell blowout we went for all the va-va-voom – think Beverly Hills red carpet glam, mixed with a day on the beach in Malibu!
How I created the look
Though I normally prefer a freshly washed mane, Haley arrived with 1 day unwashed hair, knowing her hair would perform better a “little dirty”. (Mini Note: As hair stylists and makeup artists, we are always open to collab with our clients to get the perfect look. if you know your hair will work better a certain way, we’re happy to adjust our processes!) For the majority of my other fabulous ladies: It’s so important for me to have a blank canvas to work with when I’m doing hair and make-up!
To begin, I lightly spritzed her hair with a mist of water to rewet the crown area as I added in some ColorWow Raise the Root spray to add that extra volume. Next, I applied a coin-sized amount of ColorWow One Minute Transformation Cream on mid-lengths and ends to smooth the hair. Then, applied heat with my GHD blowdryer; using my Tourmaline Wet Brush to lock in the smooth texture and tame any frizz and stray flyaways.
That flawless volume that you see? I have the Hot Tools 2-inch Iron to thank for that. I separated the hair into small, equal sections and pulled this iron from root to ends, in an ‘up and away’ direction towards me. This tool is amazing for creating body and depth in any look. I pinned the curls with rollers and allowed to cool. I finished with the Harry Josh Pro hair clips to coif my front and side sections into the direction I wanted and left them in to cool as well.
For that beautiful volume holding texture, I used ColorWow Style On Steroids Texture Spray, roughing it into the hair with my fingers to create a more undone look. A quick dose of Color Wow Extra Shine Spray and Cult Hairspray, and the look was good to go!
Make-up for the shoot
Whilst I wasn’t the woman behind the beautiful make-up created on this shoot, I am so obsessed with how it turned out. An absolute fail-safe look for almost any special occasion, I often create variations of this look on my LA make-up clients.
My favorite base makeup to use when I’m creating a bold eye look is Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, teamed with some Charlotte Tilbury Perfecting Powder. For this particular look, my current fave is the Scott Barnes Eye Shadow Palette in Snatural, which has the perfect balance of neutral and smoky base and transition shades.
