How to do Graduation Makeup and Hairstyling
It’s a huge occasion— it’s graduation day! You’ve worked hard for this milestone, and looking your best is part of the celebration. I’m Ruth B Medrano, mobile makeup artist and hairstylist with over 10 years of experience glamming beautiful ladies like you, and I’m here to guide you to the perfect graduation makeup and hairstyling!
For Makeup:
Aim for a beautiful, clean look that will stand the test of time in your photos. Start with a foundation that suits your skin type—whether you have oily, dry, combination, normal, or sensitive skin, finding the best foundation for your skin will not only enhance your final look but play into the durability of it for your day!
*Tip* Since many graduations, especially here in sunny California, take place outdoors and often have warm temperatures, consider a matte foundation for oily or combination skin types, and a satin or glowy finish for dry or normal skin types.
Foundation Recommendations:
Oily/Combination Skin: Makeup Forever HD Skin, Dior Matte Foundation Forever, or Fenty Pro Filt’r
Dry/Normal Skin: Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk, Dior Forever Skin Glow or Backstage, or Nars Light Reflecting
Makeup Tips for Graduation Day:
Prep your skin well with an appropriate moisturizer and sunscreen.
Keep the eye makeup neutral or add a touch of shimmer for a fresh look.
Enhance your eyes with lashes to make them pop in photos.
Add a subtle eyeliner or a classic cat-eye wing to define your eye.
For a bit of fun, add a pop of color to your lips or eyelids, but keep it timeless.
Use a setting spray! My favorites: Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Setting Spray and Patrick Starr One Size On ‘Til Dawn
Bring a powder & lip touch up for your day to remove any shine and keep your whole look flawless!

When it comes to graduation hairstyling, this is your chance to have some fun! Whether you opt for braids, an extension ponytail, or glamorous waves or curls, a youthful and polished hairstyle can elevate those drab graduation gowns. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Hairstyle Dos:
Choose a polished style that's not too messy or too high, as your graduation cap will sit on top of your head for quite some time during the line-up, ceremony, and post-ceremony photos.
Keep hair accessories minimal, as what looks cute now may not be as timeless in the future.
Additional Hairstyling Tips:
Wash your hair the day before graduation day and blow it dry with your blowdry brush or a round brush to create a smooth hair strand.
Secure your cap with bobby pins to ensure it stays in place throughout the ceremony. (Bring a few extra too!)
Avoid making any major changes to your hair's length, color, or texture before graduation day. Do consider getting a trim to remove split ends and ensure your hair looks healthy and vibrant for the day.
Emergency Graduation Day Glam Kit:
I highly recommend putting together and bringing a small emergency kit with essentials that include bobby pins, a mini hairspray, blotting papers, and lipstick for quick touch-ups throughout the day.
In closing, keep your graduation makeup clean and pretty. Let your youth shine through! Your graduation hairstyle is where you can add a touch of fun to your look while still keeping it polished. Years down the road, you'll be glad you took the time to perfect your graduation day look!
And for life's best moments, it's always wise to hire a beauty professional. The initial investment pays off when you're proudly displaying your photos, reminiscing, and sharing your memories.
